The Association's members include bookstores of all sizes, general or specialized for whom sale of books represents the principal activity. Today, the SLF is considered by other actors in the book sector and by public authorities as the representative union of the bookselling sector.

In addition to its representative function, the SLF's mission is to defend the moral and material interests of its members. Its action is based on the values of independence and promotion of cultural diversity as well as on the promotion of the work of booksellers. The latter must combine customer service, a varied and high-quality offer as well as the role of social and cultural mobiliser.

At the heart of its missions is the defense of the law of August 10, 1981 relating to the price of books, which has enabled the book market to develop thanks to both dense and varied distribution networks. This diversity of distribution channels makes it possible to guarantee the diversity of editorial creation by promoting its access to a large audience throughout the territory and over time.
