The Association of Czech Booksellers and Publishers was founded on the initiative of personalities such as J. R. Vilímek, J. Otto and F. Topič, in order to spread Czech books and observe professional ethics. In 1949 the Association was liquidated and all its property confiscated. In 1990, the renewed Association consciously linked to the legacy of the historical organization and set itself the objective of defending the common professional interests of publishers, distributors and booksellers in the Czech market. SČKN is registered as a civic association, whose members are publishers, booksellers, distributors and other entities with publishing departments (universities, libraries, institutes). As of 1st January 2021 the Association counted 140 members.
