Livraria Bertrand was founded in the first half of the 18th century (officially in 1732, but actually a few years earlier) by a French immigrant named Pedro Faure who settled in Lisbon. According to the Guinness World Records, Livraria Bertrand has held the title of the oldest operating bookshop in the world since April 2010.
Since its origins, Bertrand has been an illustrious brand in Portugal for its bookselling and publishing businesses. Both businesses are now separate companies but are part of Grupo BertrandCírculo, one of the largest publishing groups in Portugal.
In the mid-20th century, Livraria Bertrand began expanding and now has 58 bookstores across Portugal, including in Madeira and Azores. They also have an online store, a contact center, and a logistic center. Livraria Bertrand is now the leading specialized retailer in the book market in Portugal.
Livraria Bertrand’s success comes from its excellent operations, high-quality and diverse catalog, and above all, from the proficiency and focus of its booksellers. The company has over 500 employees and more than 1.7 million customers registered on its loyalty program, Leitor Bertrand. Bertrand’s expertise in bookselling is unmatched.
